Since 2008 a 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization called the Gateway Bike & Boathouse in conjunction with the National Park Service has been offering free kayaking out of Riis Landing (across from Fort Tilden). Working with New York City Parks Department, GBB is expanding its programming at Bay Breeze Park at the new Community Boathouse at Beach 88th Street and Beach Channel Drive.
Boy Scout Troop 298 from Brooklyn took on the challenge of converting two 20′ shipping containers into boathouses. Several other community groups have also gotten in on the action including the Jamaica Bay and Rockaway Parks Conservancy, Rockaway Beach Civic Association, the American Littoral Society and the Gateway Bike & Boathouse.
